Road Safety : issues and challenges

In 2004, road traffic deaths collisions were the sixth leading cause of death in the Eastern Mediterranean region of the World Health Organisation. They were the leading cause of death for the 15-29 year age group and the second for the 5-14 and 30-44 year age groups.

Along with Africa, the region has the world’s highest overall road traffic mortality rate. The mortality rate for young men in the 15-29 year age group ranks highest in the world (34.2 deaths per 100 000 inhabitants).
